About Kongwang Multipurpose Cooperative Society

Kongwang village is one of the cleanest villages in Amlarem Civil Sub-Division which is about 55 Km from Jowai, the District Headquarter. The village comprises 13 households and a population of 155 people and relies mainly on Betel nut and betel leaf cultivation, as well as cultivation of horticultural crops for its livelihood.

In an effort to improve their lives as well as those of community members around them, some members of the village got together and formed the “Kongwang Multipurpose Cooperative Society”. The Society engages in numerous income generating activities in the village and has even spread its services to other neighbouring villages. The Society has a rope way which was built with the assistance of the Office of the Border Area Development Officer. The society uses this rope way to transport commodities like betel nut, betel leaf and other produce on payment of a small fee. The Society charges Rs. 10/- for transporting 50 kgs of goods. The society also rents out solar lanterns which has proven to be a viable business activity for the Society especially during weddings and celebrations. The Society has six solar panels, six chargeable batteries and sixty solar lanterns. The Society rents these lanterns to nearby villages including Darrang, Lymba and Shnong Pdeng at a rate of Rs. 10 per lantern per night. The lanterns are then returned to the society by 8:00 AM the following morning so they can be recharged. On 21st November, 2013, the Society registered itself with the Amlarem Enterprise Facilitation Centre.
