Innovations at the district : pongamia plantation

Pongamia is a Bio Fuel plant known for oil production. Additionally the husk of the seeds can also be used for domestic fuel and charcoal, and the oil cake can be used as fertilizer. Hulls produced from the seeds can also be used toward manufacturing briquettes.

As part of the first phase of the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS) funded Pongamia project implemented at Umkrem village underMawthadraishan C&RD block, in West Khasi Hills, farmers from the Umkrem Circle and the Mawthir Circle were sent on an exposure visit to TOIL farm in Telengana. MSRLS is a Society registered by the Government of Meghalaya which amongst other things is also the nodal agency for implementation of Natural Resource Livelihood Mission (NRLM) in the state.
